Too Sweet to be True

Field Officer and Nutritionist, Melia Depradine, delivered some shocking news to the boys of FAPS on March 14, 2018. Everyone was speechless after finding out how much sugar is consumed by having a soft drink. A student was selected to divide 53 grams of sugar by 4 to discover how much sugar is contained in a seemingly harmless Coca-Cola. An estimated 13.25 teaspoons of sugar! Most of the interactive and informative session was spent talking about the effects of having too much sugar in ones diet.

Here are some of the effects that consuming too much sugar has on your health:

  • It overloads and damages your liver.
  • It tricks your body into gaining weight and affects your insulin and leptin signaling.
  • It causes metabolic dysfunction. Eating too much sugar causes a barrage of symptoms known as classic metabolic syndrome. To name a few, these include weight gain, abdominal obesity, elevated blood sugar and high blood pressure.
  • It increases your uric acid levels. High uric acid levels are a risk factor for heart and kidney disease.

The girls will be having a chat with the nutritionist next Wednesday at the same time.

The principal and staff appreciate the support; a joint effort to get students and parents to be more health conscious, is surely the way to go. Kudos to the Ministry of Health!
